3 Mistakes to Avoid When Brewing with a Coffee Percolator

Most people make at least one of these on their first brew. Avoid them and you'll have a great cup every time.

Mistake #1 — Grinding Your Coffee Too Fine

Why it matters:  Fine grounds extract much faster than coarse grounds. In a percolator, this means your coffee can turn bitter before you've even had a chance to pull it off the heat.

What to do instead:  Use a coarse grind — similar to coarse sea salt. A coarse grind gives you more control over brew strength and is far more forgiving when you're managing an open flame.

Pro tip:  A manual burr grinder gives you the most consistent coarse grind for camping. Pre-grinding at home before your trip works just as well.

Mistake #2 — Letting the Water Boil Too Hard

Why it matters:  A hard, aggressive boil forces water up through the basket too fast. This can splash grounds out of the basket and into your coffee — and it over-extracts everything, leaving a bitter, harsh cup.

What to do instead:  Aim for a gentle, steady perk. The glass knob on your COLETTI percolator is there for exactly this reason — watch it. You want a calm, rhythmic bubble through the glass, not a rapid violent burst.

Pro tip:  On a campfire, raise the pot slightly off the coals once it reaches a perk. On a gas stove, drop the flame to medium-low once you see activity through the glass.

Mistake #3 — Brewing for Too Long

Why it matters:  The longer your percolator brews, the more coffee is extracted from the grounds. Past a certain point, you're pulling out the bitter compounds — the coffee that tastes like it's been sitting on a burner all day.

What to do instead:  Follow this timing guide based on your preferred strength:

Brew Strength

Time

What to Expect

Light / Mild

2 minutes

Smooth, lighter body

Regular / Medium

3 – 5 minutes

Classic campfire coffee flavor

Bold / Strong

Up to 6 minutes

Rich, full-bodied, robust

Pro tip:  If your coffee comes out too strong, a splash of hot water to dilute it is perfectly fine. It won't ruin the flavor — it just lightens it up

Common Questions From New COLETTI Owners

Why does my first brew taste a little metallic?

This is normal with any new stainless steel cookware. Run two or three full brews with just water and discard the water before your first real brew. The taste disappears completely after a couple of uses.

How much coffee should I use per cup?

Start with 1 level tablespoon of coarse ground coffee per 5–6 oz of water. Adjust up or down based on your taste after the first brew. There's no single right answer — percolators are very forgiving.

My coffee has grounds in it. What am I doing wrong?

Two likely causes: your grind is too fine, or the basket isn't seated properly. Make sure the basket and stem are fully assembled and seated before brewing. Using the included COLETTI paper filters will eliminate this issue entirely.

Can I use my COLETTI percolator on an induction stove?

The standard Bozeman percolator is not induction compatible. If you need induction compatibility, COLETTI makes a dedicated Bozeman Induction Percolator designed specifically for induction cooktops. Check coletticoffee.com for details.

How do I clean my percolator after camping?

Rinse with hot water immediately after use while the pot is still warm — most residue comes right out. For a deeper clean, fill with water and a drop of dish soap, bring to a gentle boil, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on the exterior.
